Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 7 -The Wissahickon Page 54 contains newspaper clipping as follows: (a, top) These two short newspaper clippings both focus on Valley Green. The first clipping mentions that the Hotel has been remodeled and improved, and serves light lunches and refreshments. The second clipping mentions a journey past Casselberry's Valley Green Hotel, now altered and shorn of its charm but still a delightful retreat where hunger and thirst can be satisfied. The article also mentions that the original "Valley Green" mansion, owned and occupied by Judge Longstreth, was located on the stream at Whitemarsh, far above the Inn. (b, bottom) This article has a pencil inscription of 5-17-1910 and relates the story of Norman Black, a Germantown policeman, who caught an eighteen inch speckled trout in the Wissahickon, using worms as bait, thus resolving the question as to whether or not trout existed in the creek. That same day, he also landed another trout on his hook, but the trout escaped. Also, on that same day, he caught a twenty-six inch eel.
