The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 7 -The Wissahickon
Page 58 contains a letter written to Jellett by William Rotch Wister, dated March 17, 1906. (It can be assumed that Wister's response was occasioned by an initial inquiry from Jellett). In the letter, Wister recounts use of the abandoned race track near the Wissahickon Station south of Chestnut Hill for six to eight weeks by a party of young men (of whom he was nominally capitan) for training purposes. This group was hopeful of becoming a cavalry troop in the Volunteer U.S. Service. The track itself was utilized as an exercise ground and the abandoned hotel building was utilized as a barracks. The Government, at that time, declined to accept any cavalry troops.Collection
