Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 7 -The Wissahickon Page 59 contains Jellett's notes transcribed as follows: Race Track Before the war, William Rotch Wister and his associates had, near the site of the present Wissahickon Inn, a race track for speeding their horses. It was a private affair and was not maintained for gain. C. Haupt to E.C.J. 6.6.1905 Asked Jake Keyser and L. Amberg about this track. Both remembered it but neither could tell me who conducted it. E.C.J. Park Hotel Near the race track and about where the Pennsylvania Railroad now crosses, stood a hotel built and conducted by "Slushy Smith", a contractor and politician of Germantown. Smith named it "Park Hotel". R. Fee to E.C.J. 6.4.1905 June 16, 1905 I met "Slushy Smith", son of the above "Slushy Smith", and asked about his father's hotel. He told me his father owned the "Park House" but did not conduct it. E.C.J. July 2, 1905 "Slushy Smith", owner of the "Park House", dropped dead in the Germantown Poor House while on a visit there in connection with his duties. L. Amberg to E.C.J.
