Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1- The Wissahickon Page 59 contains handwritten notes of Jellett on white lined note paper. These notes are entitled "Bob Fell" and appear to be a continuation of Notes started on page 53 (see catalog number 2013.34.1.53). It should also be noted that this page is double sided and needs to be turned over to reveal the reverse side. This page of notes is not dated. Jellett recounts additional information he lerned from Fell about Nicholas Rittenhouse. He mentions "The Rockery" at Valley Green and George Baumann who built it. Fell also mentioned "Rube" Sands, a local politician he knew and the Mower Hospital. Sands established a hotel near the hospital and prospered. With the hospital closing, Sands established another hotel in the Upper Wissahickon Valley which later became the Indian Rock Hotel. Fell relates the story that Sands established a lease for the land with a Joseph Middleton; however Middleton did not own the land. The actual owner (a Mr. McFadden) negotiated a new lease with Sands for the same terms. In later years, Sands declined in health and apparently was "abused" by his sons. Fell was called for assistance. After his death, his widow opened a new hotel on Monastery Avenue, but it did not flourish as the old one had.
