Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1- The Wissahickon Page 61 contains handwritten notes of Jellett on white lined note paper. These notes are not initially entitled, but appear to be a continuation of Notes started on page 53 (see catalog number 2013.34.1.53) detailing conversations with Bob Fell. Midway down the page, a title appears: "A.C. Goell". It should also be noted that this page is double sided and needs to be turned over to reveal the reverse side. This page of notes is dated March 12, 1905. Jellett recounts initially that he spent fifteen minutes talking with a "red-headed" guard who was so relatively new to the appointment that he was of little help in answering any questions since his knowledge of the Wissahickon was sparse. The remainder of the page and the reverse of the page recounts Jellett's conversation with another guard - A. C. Goell. Goell recounted that fourty new benches were placed along the bridle path in 1904 and that the Kitchen's Lane Bridge (originally built in 1834) was reconstructed in 1904. Goell related a story of the stocking of the Wissahickon with trout. He (Goell) was present with some dignitaries and was invited to try casting. The result was a humiliating experience with the line tangled in the rocks and branches. The others preserved his (Goell's) dignity by simply commenting on the difficulity. Only one sunfish was caught all afternoon.
