The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 7 -The Wissahickon
Page 133 contains a newspaper clipping of an article entitled "Tedyuscung in Marble". Jellett handwriting attributes the article to the Germantown Independent of 6-3-1902. The article recounts the formal ceremony dedicating the statue and presenting the statue to the Fairmount Park Commission. It recounts the generosity of the donors, Mr. and Mrs. Charles W. Henry. The article also relates the history of Tedyuscung and the Lenni Lenape Tribe. Tedyuscung, the last chief of the Lenni Lenape was murdered in December, 1763 by the Paxton boys, a group of lawless settlers from the Western counties who were offended by some Indian outrages. This group (Paxton boys) actually marched to Germantown and spent the night in Market Square (hoping to march on to Philadelphia) but was persuaded to return home and bloodshed was avoided, at least for that time.Collection
