Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 9 -The Wissahickon Page 4 contains a newspaper clipping entitled "Allentown to Philadelphia". The first column begins on page 4 along with a detailed map. The article then continues on the rear of the while note paper affixed to this scrapbook page. It further continues on scrapbook page 5, which also must be turned over for the end of the article. This article will be summarized as if it all appeared on page 4. The lengthy article relates the opening of the "trolley road" from Allentown, following a road built by the Lehigh Valley Traction Company. The road begins in Allentown and runs south to its Philadelphia terminal in Chestnut Hill. The unknown author describes the view from the trolley as it proceeds south, passing through many localities. He relates some historical notes and places of interest passed on the trip. The article ends with passengers utilizing the Rapid Transit Company in Philadelphia, traversing through Germantown and hence into the heart of Philadelphia. Jellett notes the date as 1904 and indicates the article appeared in the "Ambler Gazette". The map on page 4 shows Easton and Allentown at the upper top (right and left) and the route followed by the trolley to its terminus in Chestnut Hill (denoted by a solid black line). The P&R Railroad line is denoted by a line with small perpendicular lines (which mimic the railroad ties).
