Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1- The Wissahickon Page 70 contains a lined sheet of white notepaper with Jellet's Notes entitled "Wiissahickon Waters". The page can be summarized as follows: To better understand the Wissahickon stream, one must first consider the natural features. The word "Wissahickon" is of Delaware Indian derivation (cites John Heckwelder) and has a double meaning. The Indians used two names for the stream: Wisanickan (meaning catfish) and Wissaicksickan (meaning yellow-colored stream). It is probable that these names were used separately and at different seasons. The stream has always been known for its fish, and following heavy rains for a change from pristine waters to waters with a heavy yellow hue.
