The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1- The Wissahickon
Page 79 contains (a): a pamphlet consisting of four pages entitled: "Save the Wissahickon", and (b) an "advertisement" for the "Riders' and Drivers' Meet".
(a) is a pamphlet entitled "Save the Wissahickon " published by the Riders' and Drivers' Association of Philadelphia, 403 Wister St., Germantown, Philadelphia, and printed by the Garden Club of Philadelphia. The pamphlet describes an effort to straighten and broaden the then current road through the Wissahickon so that motor cars can penetrate the upper Wissahickon (something that had not been previously allowed). The pamphlet insists that such an effort will destroy the beauty, charm and safety of the Wissahickon (sometimes called the "Eastern Yosemite". The pamphlet advocates that citizens visit the Wissahickon to experience it first-hand and then write a letter to the Fairmount Park Commission registering an objection to this proposed project. Letter writers are also advised to inform the Riders' and Driver's Association when they write their letter and are encouraged to join the Association.
(b) is an advertisement on "card stock" paper advising all that the Riders' and Drivers' Meet will be held on the Upper Wissahickon Drive on Saturday, May 14, 1921 at 2 o'clock. Attendees are advised to Walk, Ride or Dive. In case of inclement weather, this event will be held on Saturday, May 21, 1921 at 2 P.M. Driving directions suggest reaching the site by way of Springfield Avenue and parking at Valley Green.Collection
