Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1- The Wissahickon Page 80 contains a newspapaer article from the Evening Bulletin (dated July 18, 1906) with the headline: "Draining of Creek Angers Picnickers". A sub-heading is entitled: " Improvements Along the Wissahickon Compel Removal of Boats, Much to Chagrin of Pleasure Seekers". A sub-subheading notes: " TO SPEND $20,000 ON IT". The article notes the dissatisfaction of many that the Wissahickon Creek is to be drained in preparation for the widening of Wissahickon Drive. And while this fact was previously known, the date of such work was not known. Complaints have been made that to do this so early in the season and deprive visitors the main form of entertainment of watching the boaters and canoeists on the creek could have been avoided by starting the work in September. The article further details the features of the widening of the Drive to raise the road bed to avoid further flooding and the avoidance of any intrusion (where posible and practical) to the natural setting. The work is to be completed by Npovember 1, 1906 at a cost of $20,000.
