The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1- The Wissahickon
Page 85 contains (a) a column from a newspaper article [Wissahickon Memoirs] begun on scrapbook page 84 {see 2013.34.1.84d}; (b) a small newspaper article entitled: "The Deadly Park Cups"; (c) a printed page entitled "Winter Scenes Along the Wissahickon".
(a) the single column concludes the newspaper article begun on scrapbook page 84 (2013.34.1.84d). The author (William H. Shingle) continues his reminiscences about various places/locations on the Wissahickon. He mentions some prominent families that lived in Germantown and have an association to the area (the Rittenhouse and Megargee families). He adds dates and context to many of the locations and buildings he mentions. The article was written for The Independent Gazette, but is undated.
(b) is a small newspaper article entitled "The Deadly Park Cups" and has a pencil date written on it of September, 1922. The article describes a dispute between the the City of Philadelphia Department of Health and the Fairmount Park Commission over the issue of tin drinking cups located throughout the Park and used as common drinking cups. The head of the City Department (a physician) decreed the cups must be removed; however, the Park Commission resisted citing his (the physician's) lack of authority in the matter. The unknown author suggests that the doctor could strengthen his argument if he could cite a single instance of (physical) harm done to the public by use of the common drinking cups. The ultimate outcome of the "dispute" is not mentioned in the article.
(c) is a printed page entitled "Winter Scenes Along the Wissahickon". The page contains four black and white photographs (so numbered) containing the following scenes:
1. Indian Rock
2. Ruins in Cresheim Valley
3. The Devil's Pool
4. Near Gypsey LaneCollection
