Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1- The Wissahickon Page 86 contains a newspaper column affixed to the scrapbook page. The column has been cut and pasted side-by-side on the scrapbook page. Unfortunately, part of the title and part of the left side of the first column has been ripped and is not available. The column is entitled: "(Unknown Word(s) Topics of the Town). The author mentions Judge John M. Patterson as a "fervent and constant apostle" of the Wissahickon and notes an address the Judge gave to the Dickens Fellowship at the Valley Green Canoe Club extolling the beauty of the Wissahickon. There is also some mention of John Kelpius; however, much of this section is missing and cannot be properly summarized. Mention is made of a Wissahickon "character" Mom Rinker. Legend has it that she sat on a rock below Kitchen's Lane knitting with a knitting ball she would let fall to the ground. Supposedly, there were valauable mnilitary messages in the knitting ball for General Washington (then at Valley Forge). A scout of Washington was able to retrieve the ball and thus were the Bristish positions made known to the Americans. The Judge also spoke of the Rittenhouse family and their long and important connection to the Wissahickon.
