The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1- The Wissahickon
Page 87 contains three photograph cards with various scenes along the Wissahickon. A label has been affixed to the scrapbook page entitled: "Stereoscope Views about 1880". On the left hand side of each card is the following caption" "The Scenery of the Pennsylvania Railroad". On the right hand side of the card is the caption: "Purviance Philadelphia, Photographer and Publisher".
(a) the two photographs on this card are almost identical, showing a man in the background) standing in the Wissahickon creek in front of a waterfall which rises to the man's waist. The water cascades over the damn and falls a short distance into the creek bed below. Behind the waterfall is a panorama of trees and vegetation lining the banks of the creek. In the foreground are seen many rocks in the creek. Because the man is in the background, it is difficult to ascertain his purpose standing in the creek. Most likely, he is fishing and/or crossing the crrek from one bank to the opposite bank.
(b) Again, both photographs on this card are also identical. The view is a long distance photograph of the Wissahickon most likely taken from a ledge on the rock shown in the immediate foreground. It shows a view of the Wissahickon meandering in its bed with trees and vegetation lining both sides of the creek, and rocky formations both lining the edge of the banks and protruding from the creek bed.
(c) Both photographs are again identical and show a more "pastoral" scene along the Wissahickon. The view was most likely chosen from one of the banks along the creek with a tree overhanging the creek in the foreground. In the background is a scene of lush vegetation and trees on both creek banks. In the left foreground is what appears to be a stone marker (?) .Collection
