Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 3 -The Wissahickon Page 61 contains: (a, top left) This newspaper clipping is composed of the entirety of columns one,and two and the top half of the shortened column three. This article is entitled "The Lost Planterium of David Rittenhouse" and began on scrapbook page 60 (see 2013.34.3.60b). For the sake of clarity/continuity, the entire article has been described on scrapbook page 60. (b, top right) This is a reproduction of a painting/sketch(?) of David Rittenhouse. It is captioned: "David Rittenhouse, Scientist and Statesman." It depicts David Rittenhouse reviewing a document in his hands. Beside him is depicted a planetarium with two books resting beside the planetarium. (c, bottom right, to include the bottom third of column three and all of column four) This small article details the discovery of the original datestone from the mill of Nicholas Rittenhouse. The search took more than five years and was conducted under the auspices of the City Historical Society by Joseph D. Bicknell (who died during the search process) and Edwin C. Jellett (who continued the search process following Bicknell's death). It was learned that Rittenhouse took the stone with him upon moving to Roxborough and the stone was placed against the wall of his home. This property was absorbed into Gorgas Park and the structure was torn down. The trail ended at this point until Jellett was able to enlist the assistance of W. H. Shingle, a park guard in his quest. The stone was found covering a manhole of a sewer in Ridge Road. Upon lifting the stone, an inscription was seen identifying the stone as from the Rittenhouse mill. It was then removed to the guardhouse near the original mill site with the intention of having the stone erected on the site where the mill once stood.
