Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1- The Wissahickon Page 91 contains a newspaper article entitled: "Men and Things" The article is dated March 3, 1908; however, it is not clear in which newspaper it appeared. At the end of the article appears the word "PENN" which may indicate the name of the author. The article relates that the City History Society has begun to publish a series of pamphlets on various subjects, the first of which is a monograph of twenty four illustrated pages which embodies an address given by Joseph D. Bicknell entitled: "The Wissahickon in History, Song and Story". The articlle author reflects that the knowledge and use of the Wissahickon is a recent phemonenon in that previously most Philadelphia residents had little or no knowledge of the Wissahickon. He attributes the recent knowlege to a growing population trend in the northwest section of the City and to improvements in access to the Wissahickon. The article author then relates a history of the Wissahickon in terms of growth, industry, early settlers, and history of the area (as outlined in Mr. Bicknell's address). The article author also cites Mr. Bicknell's discussion of the natural features of the Wissahickon and how those features make it a unique setting within the CIty itself. And finally, he laments that there still exist many City residents who are unfamiliar with the Wissahickon.
