Description

The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1- The Wissahickon Page 94 contains a newspaper article with the heading: "Mills of the Wissahickon". The sub-heading is: "Notes Taken From an Interesting Talk by Mr. Edwin C. Jellett Before the Site and Relic Society at the Monthly Meeting." Neither the date of the article nor the newspaper in which it appeared are evident. The article can be summarized as follows: The author relates that Mr. Jellett began by noting a trip to England and Scotland and while strolling along the River Elk near Edinboro, Scotland, he came upon a scene that reminded him of the picturesque Wissahickon. Mr. Jellett then continued his address by describing some of the natural rock formations and strata of different rocks found in the Wissahickon Valley. Mr. Jellett then spoke of the natural resources in the Valley that caused mills to be built along the Wissahickon Creek. Mr. Jellet followed the development of mills along the Wissahickon from early times to the peak when 61 mills were found on the Creek from source to mouth. The last of the Wissahickon paper mills was removed in 1896. Mr. Jellett devoted much time to a listing and description of individual mills to present a more detailed "picture". An interesting aside was Mr. Jellett's reference to the library of the Site and Relic Society and the growth of the collection. A plea was made for old books, magazines, etc. to increase the Society collection.
