The Edwin C. Jellett Series of Scrapbooks, Volume 1- The Wissahickon
Page 95 contains two newspaper articles regarding the issue of allowing automobile traffic on WIssahickon Drive. The newspaper(s) in which both articles appeared is not cited.
(a) This article consists of three columns affixed to the scrapbook page. The article is entitled: "Send protest to Park Commission", and a pencil marking identifies the date as 12/3/1915. The article can be summarized as follows: The Germantown and Chestunt Hill Improvement Assocaition registered a strong protest against the effort to introduce automobile traffic to the Wissahickon Drive. The Fairmount Park Commission had proposed the measure, but had not yet acted on the measure. Opposition to the measure involves many reasons, chief among them a desire to preserve the scenic beauty of the Wissahickon, and to encourage a more active useage by citizens. It was hoped that the scenic beauty could be preserved in perpetuity, and that the introduction of vehicular traffic would thwart that hoped for effect.
(b) is a nine letter newspapaer clipping which relates that strong pressure was brought to bear upon the Fairmount Park commission to allow vehicular traffic on the Wissahickon Drive; however, through the efforts of Theodore Justice and Herbert Welsh, popular opposition proved so effecftive that the Commission abandoned their efforts and decided to retain the old rule (prohibiting vehicular traffic).Collection
