Description

Photographs from Photo Scrapbook 1, Part 1, Page 21. Photograph a: [top] is a photograph of the Thones Kunder House, located at 5109 Germantown Avenue (see also catalog numbers 2010.510.29.1-3 and 2010.472.9). The photograph shows a white three story building in the center of the photograph. The front door contains an arched pediment and there are two stone steps leading up to the front door. A Brick pavement runs along the front of the house and the bottom portion of the front facade is of brick showing a small basement window. To the left of the house is an "archway" leading to a side alley. To the left in the photograph is another detached building. Attached to the Kunder House on the right is another building with a metal overhang roof supported by two poles. Above the first story window is a sign indicating shoe repair. Another sign is extended outward from the building between the first and second story window lines. A third sign is propped beside the front steps in front of the building. The photograph inscription notes that the first public protest against slavery was held at this site in 1688. Original photograph year 1904. Photograph b: [bottom] is a photograph of what appears to be an illustration of Main Street opposite Manheim. The caption underneath this illustration indicates that the Thones Kunders House occupied the spot on which the barbershop now stands and part of the old wall remains. The fiirst Friends Meeting in Germantown was held in Kunders House in 1683. The photograpg/illustration shows two three story houses co-joined. A dormer window is shown on each house at the third story. The house on the left (Kunders House) shows a barber pole beside the front door and has two flag poles(?) extending outward from both sides of the front entrance. The house on the right has a double door entryway to a basement in front of the house and a picket fence to the right of the house with a side view of the house. Beyond the house on the right is visible another building. Tow men are visible in front of the picket fence on the sidewalk raised above Germantown Avenue. Original photograph year 1904.
