Description

Photographs from Photo Scrapbook 1, Part 2, Page 120 Photograph a [top, overlay]: Please see notes for captioning and other information. This photograph shows a view of Hood Cemetery (also known as the Lower Burial Ground) located at 4901 Germantown Avenue. The photograph is taken from within the cemetery grounds with the ornate entrance to the cemetery in the background. In the foreground are numerous headstones. In the background (across Germantown Avenue) are various buildings. Photograph b [top, under photograph a]: This photograph shows an elevated view of Hood Cemetery taken from the rear of the cemetery. The cemetery is surrounded by a stone wall and the elaborate main entrance can be seen in the background to the right. Various headstones are seen in the photograph. The large house directly acorss Germantown Avenue from the cemetery is the Wachsmuth-Henry House located at 4908 Germantown Avenue. A small side street bordering the cemetery wall to the left is seen and a man can be seen walking on the sidewalk to the left in the background. Photograph c [bottom, overlay]: This photograph shows a view of the elaborate main entrance gate to Hood Cemetery taken from across Germantown Avenue which can be seen in the foreground. The elaborate gate and wall are constructed of stone with a rounded "top arch" supported by columns. In the center of the rounded top arch is affixed a large stone "medallion". Beneath the medallion is another rounded arch resting on two supporting pillars. Wrough Iron gates are secured to the pillars at the top of stone steps leading into the cemetery. A stone wall wirth columns and a "half balustrade" extend on either side of this main entrance gate and would appear to extend along the entire Germantown Avenue portion of the property. Photograph d [bottom, under photograph c]: This photograph shows a view of the Moses Brown House located at 5253 Germantown Avenue. Germantown Avenue is visible in the foreground with trolley tracks embedded in the street paving. The property is enclosed by a hairpin fence mounted on top of a low stone wall. A gate (to the right) leads to a driveway on the right side of the house. The house itself is a full three stories with two unique dormer windows built into the front facade with the dormer roof (of a gambrel design) extending above the house roof. Almost the entire front facade is covered with ivy, making it difficult to distinguish many architectural features. The main entrance appears to be encased by an overhang creating a front porch. Above the porch (on the second story) is a large bay with the front window covered by louvered shutters. The visible second story windows are protected by canvas awnings as are some first floor side windows. The house is surrounded by large trees and other vegetation. It appears that a path runs in front of the house (although it is largely obstructed from view by foliage).
