Description

Photographs from Photo Scrapbook 1, Part 2, Page 93 Photograph a [top, left]: Please see Notes for a description of captioning, and for additional clarifying information. This photograph shows only a small portion of the right side of the Shippen House (located at 6043 Germantown Avenue), as a three story structure with shutters on the windows of all three stories. A white one story side proch is visible on the right. Beyond this side porch is a one story extension which appears to form a "rounded" end. Germantown Avenue is visible in the foreground and a large wooden utility pole doinates the center of the photograph. A fence encloses the open property between the Shippen Hopuse and the property to the right. A sign in the right hand side of the photograph identifies the Wm. Gruhler Co. Builders. Several individuals are seen walking in front of the property on the Germantown Avenue sidewalk. Photograph b [top, right]: This photograph shows a more distant view of the Shippen House taken from the opposite side of Germantown Avenue. Germantown Avenue is prominent in the foreground as brick/stone paved and embedded with trolley tracks. The Shippen House is now clearly seen as a large, three story stucco covered structure with with two dormer windows built into the roof line above the third story. The side porch is visible in this photograph but is not enclosed as in photograph 93a.The one story extension is also visible beyond the side porch. An additional two story white building is now clearly visible beyond the one story extension which was not visible in photograph 93a. A low wooden picket fence extends across the width of the property. A small portion of another building is barely visible at the far right of this photograph. Photograph c [bottom]: This photograph shows a front and side view of the Shippen House taken from the intersection of Germantown Avenue and Walnut Lane. Germantown Avenue and Walnut Lane are prominent in the foreground. The Shippen Hpuse appears as a full three story stone and stucco structure with two dormer windows built into the roof line above the third story. All windows (with the exception of the dormers and side attic windows) have shutters. The front entrance has a formal wooden surround and a sign is affixed to one of the front surround pillars announcing the Frigate Book Shop. The enclosed side porch is visible and a much smaller fence extends from the side of the Shippen House to the next building. This adjacent building shows a side brick wall of three stories. The facade of this building shows a partial awning above the first story level (indicating probably commercial usage) and two stories above. Equipment is visible at curbside in front of the Shippen House, probably indictinfg some type of sidewalk/street repair. Along Walnut Lane, behind the Shippen House, another house is visible.
