Photographs from Scrapbook 1, Part 1, Page 62
Photograph a [top]: is a small photograph of the front of the Green Tree Inn (also known as the Green Tree Tavern. Also visible to the right is a portion of the First Methodist Church. (See Photograph b, catalog number 2013.5.1.62b, for additional information). The photograph shows the Green Tree Inn in the center of the photograph - a three story stone building facing Germantown Avenue. To the left is a portion of another building. Two individuals (females) are visible in the photograph - one is walking away from the Green Tree Inn in front of the building to the left; the other woman is seen pushing a baby stroller in front of the Green Tree Inn. A side view of the stone-constructed First Methodist Church is visible showing stained glass windows and a stone spire.
Photograph b {bottom]: is a photograph of the Green Tree Inn, located at 6019 Germantown Avenue. The photograph shows a side view of the Green Tree Inn (or Tavern, as it is also called). In the foreground is a portion of a stone building which is likely the First Methodist Church which acquired the property in 1907. In 1930, the Green Tree Inn building was moved northward to its present location to accommodate an addition to the Church (Historic Germantown by Tinkcom, Tinkcom and Simon, 1955). Facing north in the photograph is a side view of the Tavern, a three story stone building with two prominent side porches supported by columns and topped with spindles beneath arched pediments. An overhang extends above the first floor front facade on Germantown Avenue. Beneath the roof line on the third floor side is a date stone insrribed: DPS 1748 (noting Daniel and Sarah Pastorius, builders in 1748). Additional buildings are visible in the photograph facing north beyond the Green Tree Inn.Photograph Details
