Page 72 has five articles glued to it. They will be discussed in order, starting in the upper left corner and working clockwise...
The first article, 72a, is a May 8, 1919 article cut from the Germantown Independent-Gazette, discussing a new [1919] bronze tablet installed at the Calvary Episcopal Church in honor of five members of the church who gave their lives during World War I. The fallen soldiers were: First Lieutenant Paul B. Kurtz, Second Lieutenant Thomas H. Miles Jr., Corporal Preston M. Wright, Second Lieutenant Edwin T. VanDusen, and First Lieutenant Norton Downs Jr.
The second article, 72b, is a December, 1918 article asking for articles to be donated to the Victory Service Star Committee, to create 3000 bags filled with "comforts" for the boys travelling overseas. Contributions were to be sent to Mrs. Pere Wilmer, Victory Service Star Committee.
The third article, 72c, is the obituary of Lieutenant Paul W. Kurtz [includes photo], who was the son of "Mr. and Mrs. William B. Kurtz, of Manheim street, Germantown, [who] will sail for France on July 12 for the express purpose of visiting the grave of their son, Lieutenant Paul B. Kurtz. He was an American aviator and was killed on May 22, 1918."
The fourth article, 72d, documents the wounding of Private George W. Leavesley, who was "wounded six times by the same shell." He was the son of Mrs. Eliza Leavesley, of 535 [sic] Keyser street." A photo of Private Leavesley accompanies the article.
The fifth and final article is a December 28, 1918 obituary of Thomas W. Leavesley. The obituary notes: "Thomas W. Leavesley, active in the First Baptist Church and B. Y. P. U., died yesterday after a short illness at his home on West Johnson street. He leaves a wife and two children. Two weeks ago his brother, Charles D. Leavesley, of East Garfield street, died from pneumonia. About two years ago a younger brother was drowned while diving at Wildwood, New Jersey, and another brother, George W. Leavesley, is seriously wounded in France. A widowed mother survives."
