Description

Photographs from Photo Scrapbook 1, Part 2, Page 116 Photograph a [top]: Please see notes for captioning and other information. This photograph shows a view of the original house on the Geissler tract located in the 5900 block of Germantown Avenue (east side), near the intersection of Germantown Avenue and High Streets. (This site is today, 2013, occupied by Germantown High School). The photograph shows in the foreground a one story stone structure with a brick chimney. a shingled roof, and a wooden door missing a top panel. The structure appears to be in a state of disrepair, and covered with the remnants of vines and other vegetation. To the rear of this stone structure (and apparently connected to it) is another one story structure. Behind this structure appears to be a two (or possibly three story structure) which is mostly obscured by mature trees. The rear structure would appear to be occupied, while the foreground structures appear unused and unoccupied. Photograph b [bottom]: This photograph shows a view of the Sproegell House located at 6358 Germantown Avenue. The structure is a full three story stone building with a dormer window built into the third story roof line. A two story extension protrudes from the left side. Germantown Avenue is seen in the foreground with trolley tracks embedded in the paving. A trellis is attached to the front facade beside and above the front entrance. Much of the house facade is covered with vines. A picket fence encloses the property along Germantown Avenue. A half-moon glass transom is seen above the front entrance. Shutters frame only the first floor windows. To the right in the photograph and to the rear of the house is what apppears to be a tall wooden fence with some sort of "structure" above the fence (although it is difficult to discern the exact nature of this "structure").
