Description

Photographs from Photo Scrapbook 1, Part 2, Page 142 Photograph a [top]: Please see notes for captioning and other information. This photograph shows a view of the Coulter Street Friends' Meeting House located on the north side of West Coulter Street between Germantown Avenue and Greene Street. The photograph shows a rather plain three story building wityh a stucco facade and a porch (supported by wooden columns) that extends on at least two sides of the building. First and second story windows are visible, as are two rounded arched windows on the third story side wall. Chimneys and raised vents are visible along the roof line. To the right in the photograph, a separate one story building can be viewed connected via the extended porch roof. Two men are seen standing to the left on the first floor porch. Photograph b [bottom]: This photograph shows a view of St. Stephen's Methodist Church located at 5207 Germantown Avenue. To the left in the photograph is the parsonage - a three story building with a smooth stucco facade and a single dormer window built inot the third story roof line. The front door is recessed with a fanlight above. There is a side porch with a roof supported by columns and a low wooden enclosure which "wraps around" the porch. To the right in the photograph (and behind the parsonage) is the Church. The Church is constructed oi stone in the Gothic style with a prominent tower supported by buttresses and arched windows. The stone tower is topped by a towering steeple with opened arched pediments (in which the bells would be presumed to be located). At the tower base are two arched double doors. The main church building features a prominent arched stained glass window, over which a cross has been embedded in the stone facade, A stone "ornament" tops the front summit of the roof ridge. An open, metal hair-pin fence and gate enclose the church property.
