Clippings and memorabilia from World War I scrapbook compiled by Dr. Naaman H. Keyser, page 40
Three newspaper clippings are glued to page 40 of the Keyser scrapbook. The first [40a] is an undated article with a photograph of a Corporal and child, with the caption "Corporal Frank D. Gardiner, 520 W. Coulter st. Germantown Base Hospital No. 20, is teaching this little French maiden English and she umblushingly admits her affection for her American."
This is followed by 40b, a July 3, 1918 article with the header "Wants to Change Name." The article notes that "The name of Von Utassy has such a Teutonic flavor that it has become distasteful to Mrs. Laura W. von Utassy, of 6013 Greene street, with the result that she began action in Common Pleas Court Friday to rid herself of it by changing it to d'Utassy. The petitioner is the wife of the late A. W. von Utassy, and she explains that the name is not German, but the prefix 'von' gives it such an appearance, and as she is native born, she would rather have the 'd' instead of the 'von.'"
The third and final article on page 40 is an undated article with the headline "Phila. Officers Promoted." The article notes "Two Philadelphia officers have been promoted to the next higher grade, according the the word reaching relatives here. First Lieutenant B. Russell Gorgas, thirty-three, has been promoted to a captaincy in the infantry. He is now stationed at Camp Pike, Ark. He resided with relatives at Germantown av. and Allen lane, Mt. Airy. He received his original commission at Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., November 26, 1917. Second Lieutenant James L. McNutt, twenty-two, quartermaster's department, has received the rank of first lieutenant. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter B. McNutt, 719 S. 21st st. He enlisted as a private in October, 1917, and was commissioned a second lieutenant in April. He is now stationed at Camp Humphreys, Va." This article includes a photograph of Lieutenant Gorgas.
