Description

Clippings and memorabilia from World War I scrapbook compiled by Dr. Naaman H. Keyser, page 45 Two 1925 newspaper clippings are glued to this page. The first clipping, 45a, bears the headline "Memorial to be Placed in Town Hall" and notes "Memory of the Gold Star heroes of the World War from Germantown, Mount Airy and Chestnut Hill will be perpetuated by two beautiful tablets, purchased through popular subscription, and placed in the memorial rotunda of the new Town Hall, nearing completion, at Germantown avenue and Haines street. This building, the only one of its kind in Philadelphia, was particularly designed to house this war memorial. In point of fact, the entire rotunda, laid out by the architect, is part of the memorial itself, and the expense of the tablet is the only part that is borne direct by residents of the Twenty-second Ward... Walter Williams, of the National Bank of Germantown, treasurer of the campaign, has been authorized to receive donations" etc. The second clipping exclaims "More than $18,000 for World War Memorial." The clipping notes that "It was not revealed until last Friday night, at the meeting held at the Germantown Young Men's Associa- Christian Association [sic], that a subscription of $3000 had been in hand for nearly a week. This came from Rodman Wanamaker. He became interested through the radio appeal in behalf of the fund. This was the largest single subscription received, and the only large subscription from one not a resident of Germantown." Pages are 7.5 x 10".
