Description

Clippings and memorabilia from World War I scrapbook compiled by Dr. Naaman H. Keyser, page 20 Page 20 includes two newspaper clippings, both undated. The first/ left clipping (20a) bears the headline "Killed Among Dead Boches," which gives the details of the death of Lieutenant Arthur V. Savage of Chestnut Hill. He was the son of Charles C. Savage. Includes a portrait photograph of Arthur V. Savage. The second (right) clipping, 20b, is "The College Man in Action" by Paul van Dyke, '81. The article consists of excerpts taken from an article published in the May, 1919 edition of Scribner's Magazine. In it, van Dyke discusses the attitudes of college men towards the war, their involvement in it and reactions to it. The announcement is in the form of a letter, addressed to "Germantowner" and includes the following: "Have you a Son, a Brother, or other near relative or friend at the front? Do you care for the men on the fighting line, the barrier between Pan-Germanism and Americanism, between Autocracy and Democracy, between a system of espionage of homes, thoughts and acts, and Civil Liberty, between your Country and your Country's foes? Would you like to do some real personal thing for the comfort of the men on the line, for the saving of his life, the amelioration of his suffering, and his restoration to health? This is your chance. The men and women of Germantown are asked to furnish an Ice Machine to Base Hospital, No. 38 (Jefferson Hospital Unit), to be established in France. Logan is furnishing an Ambulance. Other localities of our city are furnishing other parts of the equipment. But Germantown is furnishing the Ice Machine." Etc. Donations for the Ice Machine were to be sent to the Chelten Trust Company, 5614 Germantown Avenue. Pages are 7.5 x 10".
