Description

Clippings and memorabilia from World War I scrapbook compiled by Dr. Naaman H. Keyser, page 28. Two newspaper clippings are glued to page 28. The first article [28a] includes obituaries of Henry H. Woodward and Julian C. Biddle, who died in France. Woodward was the son of Senator and Mrs. George Woodward, of Krisheim, Chestnut Hill [not Germantown, as is claimed in the article]. Biddle was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Biddle, of Ambler. As of the writing of the article, a memorial dedicated to the boys was to be dedicated in Verdun. A portrait photograph of each boy accompanies the article. The second article [28b] deals with libel and slander, with "Merchant to take Action Against Slanderous Gossips." It notes that "Martin L. Constabel, who conducts the bakery at No. 6230 Germantown Avenue, has engaged counsel to proceed criminally and civilly against persons who have been circulating slanderous and scurrilous statements as to his loyalty to the government of the United States. Mr. Constabel, who has been a naturalized citizen of the United States for the past forty-two years, has been engaged in the bakery business in Germantown for many years, and is respectable and law abiding, and the owner of real estate. He is now thoroughly aroused and determined to punish the guilty persons, who in a mean and contemptible manner have circulated stories to the effect that his sympathies in the present world's conflict are with Germany and against this, his adopted country." The third and final clipping [28c] is of photos of C. M. Waterhouse [killed], and Norman S. Lomas [wounded] during the War. Pages are 7.5 x 10".
