[BLUE INK - LATER WRITING] Introducing Mr Ames [START - black ink] Madrid June 12th 1843. My dear George: This note will be handed / to you, I suppose about the middle of / August, by my friend and fellow traveller, / Mr. Ames, who has also kindly taken / charge of a roll of music for Nevis : / You will be able to learn from him all / the particulars of the manner of life, we / lead in our exile here, and should his / stay in the city afford you an opportunity / it will give you pleasure, I am satisfied, / to shew him any attention in your / power : Within a few days we have / [END OF PAGE 1] Had a very favourable specimen of our / Countrymen in the person of a Mr. Eaton / of Baltimore, who is on his way home thro’ / France, after an extended tour of four / years in Russia-Egypt-Syria +c. _ Mr. Austin, the husband that was / of Bone’s pretty friend Miss Elwell, and / a Mr. Berg, both from Gotham, are / expected here tomorrow or the next day The disturbances seem to increase / and spread in spite of the hot weather : / In the South, they appeared to be nearly / over, when they broke out in the north : / At Saragossa there has been a sharp / skirmish in the Streets, wherein the Insur - / gents were defeated, with a loss of / [END OF PAGE 2] Several killed and wounded _ I am looking with interest to the / establishment of the French steamers form / Cherbourg, which I hope will bring Madrid / and New York a little nearer to each other; / the greatest delay takes place of course in / Spain, where they seem destined always to / be about a hundred years behind the / rest of the world : From this city to Bayonne, / about 400 miles, the mail requires three / days, and this route is the best in the / Kingdom _ Judge from this, of the rest : Yours affectionately Alex’r Hamilton G. L. Schuyler Esq. New York [ADDRESS]
