[START - black ink]
Madrid June 12th 1843.

[END OF PAGE 2]
Several killed and wounded _
I am looking with interest to the / establishment of the French steamers form / Cherbourg, which I hope will bring Madrid / and New York a little nearer to each other; / the greatest delay takes place of course in / Spain, where they seem destined always to / be about a hundred years behind the / rest of the world : From this city to Bayonne, / about 400 miles, the mail requires three / days, and this route is the best in the / Kingdom _ Judge from this, of the rest :
Yours affectionately
Alex’r Hamilton
