L.2004.72Description
Hand-drawn map titled: "A MAP / of the Town of / RHINEBECK / in the County of Dutchess. / Survey'd in December and January 1797-1798 / Alexn. Thompson;" map extends from "Hudson's River" in the lower part to "Columbia / Town of Clermont" border on the left side to "Part of North East" border at top to "Part of Clinton Town" on the right side; the script of these demarcations is picked out with distinct patterns, and the compass rose is colored with pink, yellow, and black ink, with a fleur-de-lis marker pointing left; map depicts roads including Salisbury Road and Road from Pine Plains, as well as Post Road; map depicts houses varying in size; some identified, including John R. Livingston, Gen'l Armstrong, and A. Delamater, Esq.; churches, inns, mills, kills, stores, and docks depicted, as well as lakes, rivers, Magdalen Island, a creek, and a swamp; water bodies colored gray (blue); five arrows appear in "Hudson's River" indicating water flow to the south (right); lower right corner reads "The Courses are as the Magnetic Needle now points. / The Post Road and outlines laid down from Survey. / Scale / Forty chains to an inch. / Feb. 2nd 1799 Alex n. Thompson;" it appears that pencil demarcations were added later, breaking up the town into numbered segments 1-14.Made/Created

Curatorial RemarksNote
From Montgomery Place collection.
According to Patsy Vogel of the Red Hook Historical Society, there are three other known versions of this map, one in the State Archives in Albany, one in the Star Library in Rhinebeck and one in a private collection (which was sold in in the early 2000s, evidently to another private collector). Vogel believes the HHV version is the most complete, with more details than the other versions she has examined.
