Description

Nineteenth-century authors seeking to make comparisons, either favorable or not, often compared the Hudson to Germany's Rhine River. Both flowed through farmland and vineyards past sites of historical note, but the rivers were so different in character that many felt the comparison—and the nickname—were false. George William Curtis in his 1852 Lotus-Eating created a more nuanced and favorable judgement, writing of the Hudson: "There is no littleness to the Hudson...The Danube has in part glimpses of such grandeur, the Elbe has sometimes such delicately penciled effects, but no European river is so lordly in its bearings, none flows in such state to the sea." Engraving with five numbered images from Hudson River area: image at top left, grandfather clock in interior setting, marked "2"; image at top center, a stone house with shingled roof and two chimneys with figure in an open doorway, marked "1"; image at top right, two adjacent boats on water, one boat with active smokestack, marked "3"; image at bottom left, river scene with steamboat and sailboats, buildings on shore at center, mountain in background, marked "5"; image at bottom right, empty fireplace with two andirons, simple mantle, wood chair at bottom left, marked "3"; at bottom center, printed: "1. Washington's Headquarters at Newburg.-- 2. Washington's Clock. --3. Kitchen in Washington's Headquarters.-- 4. A Tow on the River.-- 5. Piermont, the Scene of the Execution of Major André.", "A TRIP ON THE RIVER HUDSON ("THE AMERICAN RHINE")", at top left (of page), printed: "592"; at top center, printed: "THE GRAPHIC"; at top right, printed: "DEC. 6, 1884"; image at top half of page: "THE AGITATION AMONG THE SKYE CROFTERS"; text on verso.
