New York Novr 28h 1843 I have been so much engaged my dear / Boy for a long time past in my new / employments as not to have had it in my / power to write to you. I have now the / afsurance that success has crowned our / efforts and that I will be permitted / to devote myself to my family and / my own comforts and home _ We have / saved the H. R Road from being ??: / [--sed?] and have secured our Rail / Ro Steam Boat contract a most favor / able one for 7 years I have to day / [part?] $15000 for ⅓ of the Eureka + / that contract. The latter being worth / if we substitute others in our place / we leave $12000 a year if we perform / the work with our own Boat much / more We prefer to sell it as we / may then with the Eureka / [END OF PAGE 1] Engage in the [Purmail Rower?] at a / price which will give us $11000 profit / I have just parted with G + Robert / after a long conference on the subject / of a contract for that Boat on that / Route at such rates as to be enabled / to realize such a profit and in / all probability to launch at Dobbs / ferry 4 times a day which if not / very advantageous will save us / money and be [??tly] convenient. / I do not enter into particulars / because at present nothing is quite / settled All my stocks are rising the / Illinois is selling at $16 [?] then it / was as low as $3 The B + I is cur= / =rent at $35 + advancing The / Trust sells at 100. It was at low / as 70 and will in July certain - / ly sell pay 5% which makes it / [END OF PAGE 2] A 10% stock and my [house?] and lots are rising in / price and for Rent so that we have ago a fair / prospect of being again restored to a competency / if not wealth. I think I see the day not u= / nder say 1 or 2 years when I will be out of / debt [return?] my Real Estate in [F–?] + [C–?-ey] / my ⅓ of the Boat with an income of 7 / or 8000 a year __ Mama and the Girls are at present / at Home The latter will pafs a part / of the winter at Boston + Mama + I at / Home I I have ot got a capital / pair of Bay carriage Horses / Gentle true and Strong / with two [blood?] colts quite gentle and / true for myself Lee for an Extra and / a Beautiful year old which I / intend to Rent a Herd having [^ and] cause / him to be well broken sop that any / person may ride him By the way Have you received your saddle / and in what Bindle of Papers am I to / look for the Certificate of Illinois Stock God bless you dear Boy Yours - JAH [END OF PAGE 3] It is well understood the Tyler will urge Congress / to annex Texas to the Union and it is feared / that question will shake the union [with c??ture?] / England has been busy there and we are to be / drawn to that fearful [means?] by the a-[ff—--?] / that she designs getting a foot hold there [ADDRESS] John Miller Esq US despatch Agent No 13 Henrietta Street London Alexander Hamilton Esqr Secty of Legation of the U.S. Madrid [REVERSE OF ADDRESS] Nov 30th 1843 From Papa _ Rec’d Decr 23d _ 1843.
