Notes
Remarks: Noted 11/9/2016, an area of loss to the gilding on the right side of the frame, more than a chip (see images in folder); no fragments were found; this may have worsened as the result of temperature changes in the MH due to lack of heat over several days last month.Notes
Remarks: No conservation of this painting or frame was done for Winter Antiques Show; small drip by sitter's left hip in background and spot below coat on left; drip in curtain area; small white dots lower right corner; small chip in frame along bottom edgeNotes
Remarks: Felicity Campbell examined the canvas for possible inclusion in the 2012 Winter Antiques Show Loan Exhibition: varnish is even, matte effect of varnish is OK for this style and period of portrait, there are small spots that could be touched up; there is a bit of hazing over subject's shoulder and at his foot; there is a "drip" in the curtain and a worn area that could be touched up; some light surface dirt but no significant work required; Marylou Davis examined the frame: frame had major restoration work in the past and may have been stripped; this is an 18th century carved frame, but the original gilt treatment has been stripped away and replaced with current gilt; this is done well, but not original [Jessa J. Krick, 9/8/2011]Notes
Overall Analysis: Details of condition: Extensive restoration, 3/59, S. Keck. Cleaned, relined, restretched, impainted, varnished.

Curatorial RemarksNote
Attribution to Vanderlyn, common in earlier days, and once again mentioned, most dubious "DePeyster" painter executed some 20 or more portraits.
In 1973, Mary Black, Curator of Paintings at the New York Historical Society, tentatively attributed VC.58.22 to Gerardus DuyckinckNote Type
