Description

Children's album of prints, covered in black watered silk with gilt decoration: "ALBUM" is written in Gothic capital letters with calligraphic flourshes; it is surrounded by an ornate rococo revival rectangular border, in turn that is bordered by squiggling vines, this pattern appears all over on the back; the album contains fifteen printed scenes touched with paint of children working and playing: 1) Three girls feeding chickens in front of a rustic cottage; a dog is chained to a dog house on the right; "678." is printed in the upper right hand corner. 2) Two girls and two boys in peasant, possibly Dutch, dress make a snowman in a field; to their left is a bundle of sticks, in the back a house with a steeply pitched roof; across from this page is written in pencil: "See these dear little children making a snow image, the poor little girl on the left has cold hands, she puts hers under her little apron, to warm them, while her sister Gretchen is so eager showing Hans how to put the pipe in the mouth of the snow image, tho she does not think of the cold, while Ulrich brings new balls to finish it off with-" 3) Three boys and a girl parade; one boy directs with a sword, another beats a snare drum, the third carries a gun over his shoulder while the girl carries a flag; they parade outdoors with a tall house behind them on the left. 4) Three girls kneel around a fourth who is kneeling, all are in native dress; one appears to be placing a wreath on the head of the girl in the middle; the scene takes place within an Alpine background. 5) Two boys and a girl garden in front of a fence and large house; one boy kneels to plant a plant, the girl stands holding a shovel and watering can, while the other brings the next plant from a basket of seedlings. 6) Two boys, one girl, and a dog stand by a stream; one boy holds a fish net connected to a pole while the little boy pulls the fish from the net; a bucket is on the ground. 7) Three girls (two sitting and one standing) play with flowers in a pastoral landscape. 8) Three children sit outside; the boy and girl watch the older girl while she plays with a doll; the boy and older girl sit on a bench; there is a ball in the left foreground. 9) Scene with a boy and two girls in native costume with sheep. 10) Two girls and a boy play with a dog outside. 11) Three girls (youngest child possibly a boy) play dress up with a cat in front of the dressing glass in an interior with a chimney, chimney glass, chair, curtain, and table with cover. 12) Two little girls meet another who is carrying a small dog; the scene takes place on a path near a large house. 13) Two girls and a boy in native dress walk near a rustic cottage; there are chickens and a rooster behind them; one girl gives a bird a small branch with some leaves on it. 14) Two girls in seventeenth-century dress play with a doll while another child sits to the right. 15) Two girls sit outside crying; their birdcage is open and a bird lies dead at their feet. Tucked inside is a heavy paper with various pencil and ink inscriptions.
