Curatorial Remarks

Note

From email correspondence between Margaret Vetare and Ann McMullen of the National Museum of the American Indian in 2002, regarding VC.59.566: "This is a pretty typical basket for western Connecticut/eastern New York for almost anytime between 1860 and 1900, and it could be Mahican or Schaghticoke or one of the related groups. The color looks like indigo or bluing, and I think it looks darker than normal because of what was smeared across the surface of the basket after it was made: it looks like brownish stain put on with a brush since it doesn't cover some parts. This is very odd thing to do unless someone was trying to make it look older or unless you can look closely and see that it is some type of varnish. This may have had handles: check the top of the rim."

General Note

Note

Some question about the dating of this basket. In the 2004 PM guidebook, it is given the date of "nineteenth century"; during cataloging it was given an earlier date [Jessa Krick, Associate Dir. of Collections, 4/16/2018].
