Curatorial Remarks

Note

This garniture prompted a great deal of discussion from ceramics curators during the Attingham Study Week tour to VCM in June 2012. Several people questioned the attribution of this set to 18th-century China, citing the color palette, applied decoration and applied animals. Although the set is handpainted, there was some feeling that it might be Samson, a French 19th-century manufacturer of Chinese-inspired copies [Jessa J. Krick, Collections Manager, 5/6/2013].
