Description

An American Empire mahogany veneered double sleigh bed. It is Late Classical in its lack of ornamentation, heaviness and smooth curving lines. The form was inspired from French design. The headboard is composed of a rounded form that moves into a flat plane that is divided into two sections by a horizontal molding that runs across the headboard and around the rectangular legs. The veneer is of crotch wood which is beautifully aligned as the pattern of the grain moves over the surface. The rectangular bed posts reflect the contour of the head and foot boards. They consist of a rounded head that flares outward and is articulated by horizontal mouldings. The bed posts end in blocked feet terminated by casters. The side boards are rectangular in shape with a concave contour on top. The footboard is identical to the headboard only smaller in height.
