Description

Sleigh bed with surround: painted ivory with multicolored flowers and garlands, with gilt lines and edges. The two side boards are rectangular in shape with an inverted arch carving in the top center. The arch carving has a half circle at center flanked by two smaller peaks; within the half circles is a bunch of flowers. On both ends of the sides are bunches of flowers. The base flares out slightly with a gilded ridge and rests on flat bracket feet. Both sides would fit together to form a box. The foot and head boards would fit on to the box or frame, through the use of slots. One foot/head board is highly decorated with undulating garlands and bunches of flowers on its exterior side. On the interior side it is decorated similiarly. The other foot/head board is plain on its interior side and decorated with a bunch of flowers in the center of its exterior side. The foot/head boards are S-shaped. The ends of the boards have a curving L-shaped to them so that they resemble an old 19th c. sleigh.

Note

The caption for the image of the chair and table from this suite in Gallant Gothic states: "Probably Philadelphia" as an origin and the text gives "c. 1850" as a date. One side of the bed surround is much more ornamented than the other, indicating it was intended to be placed facing the room, with the other side facing the wall. See James Abbott's rendering of Louise's bedroom for how this bed likely was installed on the An American Arcadia wedsite, with the other pieces from the set. This bed is part of a larger suite of painted "cottage" furnture, c. 1850. There is a dresser/console table with mirror (stored apart from the table), dressing table, two armchairs and a bookcase stored in the Coach Barn attic. There are four occasional chairs and a small table from the set that are stored in the manor house. It appears that only the bed has been accessioned [Jessa J. Krick, 10/14/1025].
