Description

This illustration from the German language edition of Frank Leslie's Popular Monthly shows the packing process for the grapes harvested in Marlboro. (Other images in this exhibition show the harvest and the crates amassed at the Marlboro Landing for shipping). Trimming and packing took a significant amount of care, shown here by the women wielding shears and brushes and by the man kneeling to arrange boxes in crates to prevent the fruit from being crushed. These larger crates were then transported by wagon to the landing, where they would be loaded into steamships bound for New York City and beyond. According to W. W. Clayton's 1887 History of Steuben County, the extensive shipping of grapes from New York necessitated another business in the state, the manufacture of grape boxes, both for the local market and for export to Pennsylvania, North Carolina and California, among other states. Colored engraving of men and women sorting, cleaning, and packing grapes: outdoor setting with fields in background; women stand at high table piled with grapes; two women cut grape clusters with scissors; third woman whisks dirt off grape cluster; two men at right bring boxes filled with grapes; man at left foreground packs boxes in wood crate; at bottom center, printed: "Berpacken von Weintrauben nahe Marlboro am Hudson, New-York. (E. 294.)".
