Curatorial Remarks

Note

The source of Kate Johnson's assertation that the bouquet holder was purchased by Washington Irving for Charlotte "Charlie" Irving is unclear. (This assertion appeared in several publications, including Of Sterling Character and the MMA catalog for Art and The Empire City.) As a matter of fact, the object file contains notes provided by the donor about the provenance citing the gift of the holder to Charlotte "Charlie" Irving from William Grinnell. See also WHI Fellow Cynthia Smith's report, August 2019 [Jessa J. Krick, 11/26/2019].
