General Note

Note

Part of a group of objects related or belonging to Henry du Pont Irving (1875-1895), the brother of donor's grandmother, Ellen ("Elaine") Woodriff (née du Pont Irving); he was known as "Tiny", a nickname pronounced "Teeny"; according to family history, "Henry died at Sunnyside on September 21, 1895 as a result of a football injury sustained in the fall of 1894." This story is untrue. Catalina Hannan was able to confirm this was incorrect: Alexander Duer Irving (Pierre Paris Irving's son) doesn't buy the house until 1896. In 1895, only the McLindens are living at Sunnyside full time at this time, so this story of Henry's death at Sunnyside seemed incorrect, and was in fact proven to be untrue by Cat's discovery of Henry's death certificate. He died in Richmond County, Staten Island. Cat added: "Pierre Paris went to Staten Island as a minister and many of his children and his wife's relatives lived there. Alexander (Henry's father), grew up on Staten Island, worked in insurance in Manhattan and had a residence on Staten Island. Susan "Susie" Storrow, an Irving family relative, writes of going there in the summer and lists numerous cousins and connections." [C. Hannan, J. Krick, 2/19/2019]. Wooden box originally contained the cufflinks, tintype, dogwood seeds, dogwood stem, label and notes now accessioned as SS.2009.5a-b, SS.2009.6 a-l, and SS.2009.7.
