Description

Reproduction Chinese Chippendale style mahogany curio cabinet. Pagoda top has carved shingles and is in the "typical" Chinese hipped roof style with concave rafters. Roof is supported by two square columns in front and solid wood behind; pagoda rests over the center section of the cabinet. The top of the cabinet has a fretwork gallery along the two sides and the left and right rear, where it meets the back of the pagoda. At the two back corners there are short posts with flower-shaped finials. the top of the cabinet has a cornice just below, which extends around both sides and across the front, jutting out in front to correspond to the center section. The shelving portion of the cabinet is divided into three sections, left, center, and right. The left and right sections are mirror images of each other. Each has three shelves. At top, above the top shelf, is a fretwork decoration that extends across the front of the section and around the exterior side, and consists of a shell in the center with scrolls extending beneath an openwork pattern of rectangular forms. The two top shelves have galleries around the front and exterior sides. The bottom has no gallery and rests just above the top of the base. Fretwork corner brackets are affixed below the top and middle shelves. The center shelving section is enclosed, unlike the end sections, which are open. This section has a glass door with carved scrollwork decoration at each corner and around the escutcheon. The sides are wood and the shelves are not decorated. This section projects out in front farther than the two side sections. The base of the cabinet echoes the shape of the shelving section. It has three drawers, approximately 5" high, and is supported by four fretwork legs. The two front legs have two fretwork surfaces each, at right angles to each other and the outer corner. The two rear legs have one fretwork surface each. Each leg has a block foot.
