General Notes

Curatorial Remarks

Note

This type of candlestick, usually of sheet iron (or less often tin), with lever for raising candle, known commonly as "hog-scraper", from its supposed use to scrape bristles from scalded hogs. Inner edges of the base (generally round though occasionally square or octangonal) are often still sharp enough to offer some justification for this object's reputation as a double-purpose tool.
