General Notes

Curatorial Remarks

Note

Miscellaneous: This type of candlestick, usually of sheet iron (or less often, tin), with lever for raising candle, commonly known as "hog-scraper," from its supposed use to scrape bristles from scalded hogs. Inner edges of base (generally round, though occasionally square or octagonal) are often still sharp enough to offer some justification for this object's reputation as a double-purpose tool.
