Miniature of young woman at monument: against background of light blue sky, greenish-brown tree and shrubbery, young woman kneels, head in profile, body almost 3/4 view, facing left, with right hand at bosom, left extending wreath of blue-red roses over monument, from which arises painted orangy-red flame. Figure has longish brown hair, held in place by fillet, and wears flowing white dress with low neck, flaring collar, high waist, and long sleeves puffed at upper arm; shading of dress brown; suggestions of pastel blue and red trimming;
flaming columnar altar before which figure kneels is applied mother-of-pearl (apparently set originally in wet paint, without glue); in turn, Doric column has applied gold bands (abacus, base), gold wires (fluting of shaft), twisted gold strands (swag at neck, molding of base), and tiny seed pearls (echinus, swag at neck, mouldings of base); at right, behind bushes and tree, head and shoulders of brown-costumed man, 3/4 view, with long brown hair, parted in the middle, may be seen observing the lady; reverse: mounted upon irridescent blue-grey taffeta, eight locks of brown human hair intertwined.
Frame: Unornamented gold, ovoid shape, with strap and knob of gold at top (also brass ring).
Crystals convex.Artwork Details
