Curatorial RemarksNote
Two of the set (SS.89.15 & 20) were in the exhibition "Visions of Washington Irving" 10/91-12/91; see bibliography tab for these two records (or Visions catalog) for more information.
Boscobel curator Jennifer Carlquist came to Sunnyside for a research appointment and thought these chairs were very quirky and unusual. She thought the seats had been replaced (they would have had rush seats originally) and that they might have been Connecticut chairs painted in New York, although there is nothing to identify the scenes as specifically Hudson River Valley.
According to family lore, one of Dr. Crueger's sisters painted the chairs in the HHV collection (SS.89.15, SS.89.20); this is without documentation other than donor information gave at the time of accessioning.
Rev. Gouverneur Cruger was the pastor of the Church of Divine Love of Montrose, N.Y.; his aunt (?) Eliza Leticia Cornee Cruger (1822-1901) was married to John Peach Cruger (1812-1822) and resided at Boscobel when the house was in its orginal location [Jessa J. Krick, Collections Manager, 11/8/2016].Note Type
