VC.95.18Description
Chippendale-style splat-back side chair with scroll splat and straight front legs. The serpentine crest rail has two side ears and a central carved shell. The splat scrollwork grows from the crest rail. It consists of two larger intersecting c-scrolls with two smaller c-scrolls resting on them and facing outward. The larger c-scrolls rest on a v-shaped figure flanked by two elongated, outward facing c-scrolls. The splat goes into a trapezoid base with carved molding on top. The stiles are plain, slightly tapered from bottom to top. The seat is upholstered over the rails in black modern leather. The seat is furnished with brass tacks along the bottom of its front and sides. At the corners of the seat, the tacks extend vertically to the top of the rails, flanking each corner. The bottom of the seat is covered with modern black fabric. The front legs are straight (also called Marlborough legs), square in section. The back legs are of one piece with stiles; they curve backward, particularly in the lower portion. There are four stretchers, which run between legs on all four sides.Made/Created
