Note

Might tentatively be attributed on stylistic grounds (details of turnings, bow, etc., and general proportions) to John DeWitt, a NYC and Upper Hudson River Valley (Kingston) Windsor chair maker who was in 1796 commissioned to make Windsor chairs for the redecorated Federal Hall. Advertising in newspapers at least until 1796, he is listed in the directory as early as 1794. Interestingly, the turnings which he used for the Federal Hall chairs were of a type generally thought to be of the period c. 1770. Quality of DeWitt Windsors generally high.
