One of a set of five "riddle-back" or "ladder-back" side chairs, three upholstered in leather, two in silk: back consists of serpentine crest rail and three conforming slats, undulating and pierced (center of slat is carved to resemble a medallion with bottom edge leafy in outline and an oval piercing in center, curved piercing on either side follows outline of slat); slightly tapering and curved stiles are molded and meet crest rail in the form of gently rounded ears; straight front legs have some molding (a slight "shadow" running up each side); rear legs cant backward; rectangular back, side and medial stretchers; trapezoidal-shaped seats are upholstered over the rail, either in reddish-brown leather with brass tacks running around the lower edge of the seat rail and around stiles, or in silk of a textured pink-lattice figure on a gold background with pink gimp in same configuration as tacks; corner blocks on four chairs consist of an oak brace in each corner (one chair has replaced corner blocks in the form of maple blocks triangular in section).Made/Created
