Description

Neoclassical mahogany-veneered side chair having an upholstered seat and angled saber legs: the crest rail has a scroll on each end, scrolls across the top, and a loop at the center bottom; the pierced, carved splat is constructed of three pieces: an anthemion over a narrow horizontal bar over a horizontal piece that stretches between the stiles approximately halfway between the seat and the crest rail; the bottom part of the splat has scrolls along its top and a slight, symmetrical wavy pattern along its bottom; the three sections of the splat are clearly discernable when viewing the chair from behind; the stiles have a 3/4" wide flat channel extending from the scroll on the crest rail down to the seat; the stiles continue down and curve back slightly to form the rear legs; the seat is upholstered over the rail; the seat rails are 2 1/8 high, and the front corners of the rails are curved; the seat is reinforced by four metal brackets screwed onto its inside corners; the saber-shaped front legs face out at a 45 degree angle; the seat is reupholstered in black horsehair having a pattern of octagons alternating with squares, each enclosing smaller squares or checks; "B 16" on inner seat rail.
